Passer-by rescues dumped dog from Walsall waterfront

An abandoned dog has been rescued by a Walsall man after she was found 'afraid' and 'malnourished'.

Ben Brittain was walking by when he saw the dog looking skinny and whimpering.

The German Shepherd was found by Walsall Canal, in front of Hungry House in the town centre.

Mr Brittain, aged 24, from Walsall, said: "It was obvious she had been dumped.

"She was afraid, crying and looking skinny and malnourished when I came across her.

"I spoke to some staff at Hungry House who said she'd been there all day but weren't sure what to do - I couldn't allow just leaving her, you must be compassionate."

Mr Brittain, who combines his work in the mental health field along with studying for a master's degree at the University of Birmingham, approached the dog slowly, unsure whether she would attack.

He added: "I stayed close by her for a bit so she could familiarise herself with my scent.

"I obviously approached with caution, I didn't know her history, whether she'd been abused or anything like that.

"After a while she let me stroke her and has been by my side ever since."

With the help of staff from Hungry House, Mr Brittain managed to get the dog to safety.

The self-confessed huge dog lover has temporarily named her Alice and took her back to his house to feed and keep her warm.

He's notified the local dog warden and is unsure of whether he will keep the dog - a matter he needs to take up with his flat mate.

He said: "I would love to keep her, she's adorable - it's important she goes to the right place.

"I just hope she was dumped out of desperation rather than out of malice."
