The suspects, aged 24 to 53, from India, were found at the Miami Fish Bar in Dudley Road, Wolverhampton.

The Home Office said four had overstayed their visas and one had entered illegally.

The chip shop was served with a notice warning it could be fined up to £20,000 per illegal worker if bosses cannot produce documentation.

Four of the men have been detained pending deportation from the UK while the fifth has been ordered to report regularly to the Home Office until his case can be heard.

The government department warned the Miami Fish Bar was potentially facing an £80,000 fine.

Carol Scarr, of the West Midlands Immigration Enforcement team, said: "It is important for businesses to be aware that they must carry out simple 'right to work' checks on their staff."
