The woman, who was believed to be in her 50s, had to be cut out of her mangled car but avoided serious injury after crashing into another vehicle and a lamppost in Smethwick.

And she was not the only person to have a lucky escape today, as two hours later a toddler survived with cuts and bruises after he was hit by a car in Bloxwich.

The first incident took place just after 1.30pm today on Holly Lane, where the trapped woman was freed by firefighters and checked over for minor injuries before being taken to Sandwell Hospital as a precaution.

A picture posted by West Midlands Fire Service on Twitter showed her red car left disfigured on the pavement on top of a signpost bent to such an extent it was parallel to the ground.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, Jamie Arrowsmith, said: "We were called to the scene after reports of a two-car RTC.

"There was a woman who was trapped inside one of the cars and had to be cut free - but had no significant injuries."

One person was taken to hospital after this crash in Hednesford

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson added: "The car badly damaged had hit a road sign and the lady inside had to be cut out.

"Both vehicles were made safe by us before we left the scene at 2.30pm."

Meanwhile one person was taken to hospital after a car overturned in the middle of a busy road in Staffordshire.

Traffic had to be stopped at the junction of Bradford Street and Cannock Road in Hednesford after the accident at around 1.40pm.

A silver Ford overturned while the front of a green Vauxhall Corsa was also badly damaged.

A 30-year-old was taken to County Hospital in Stafford by ambulance suffering from chest pain.

Less than two hours later, a four-year-old boy escaped with just cuts and bruises after he was hit by a car.

Paramedics attended the crash at the junction of Sand Bank and Wolverhampton Road in Bloxwich at about 3.30pm.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the boy was able to get up straight away following the accident but was left 'distressed'. He arrived at the Walsall Manor Hospital at around 4.30pm.

The car had been moving at slow speed when it hit the boy, who was left with a cut forehead and bruising to his elbow and right knee.

Anyone with information on the Hednesford crash is asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101.
