Life-long Baggies supporter Eric Murray, aged 83, was taken ill in the West Stand on Saturday before kick-off but later died in hospital.

Meanwhile Watford fan Ray Batchelor, 81, also a life-long supporter of his club, died after collapsing at the Hawthorns Station following the game.

Tributes have been paid to both fans by their football clubs who have sent their condolences. Mr Murray's family thanked the club and community for their support.

Mr Murray, who was born in Oldbury, has been a devoted supporter of the club since the 1940s.

He was described as Albion 'through and through' by his family - who loved the 'the great Ronnie Allen team' during the 1950s. They thanked the support that the club and community showed followed his death.

Son Steve, 47, said: "We would like to thank everyone who has offered their condolences and support. It is comforting so many Albion fans were thinking of dad at this time.

"He received tremendous care on Saturday when he was looked after with dignity and concern.

"He loved his football and especially loved the great Ronnie Allen team of the 1950s – and our family is all Albion as a result. We've been touched by the support from everyone."

A club spokesman said: "Last Saturday proved to be a particular sombre occasion with the death of a Watford supporter after the game followed by this sad news of one of our own in Eric Murray.

"He was a devoted Baggie who loved his trips to The Hawthorns. The Club has remained in contact with Eric's family throughout the week and they have our deepest condolences following his passing."

Mr Murray was a retired sales rep and a part-time musician. His funeral will be held at Powke Lane Crematorium, Rowley Regis, on December 20.

Hornets fan Mr Batchelor received CPR at the station after watching his team play the Baggies but could not be revived.

Watford issued a statement saying everyone at the club was 'deeply saddened' to learn of his death.

Chief executive Scott Duxbury said: "I was deeply moved to hear the news of Ray's passing as I journeyed home from the match.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Ray's family and friends at this time."

West Bromwich Albion said: "Albion would like to extend its sympathies to the family of Watford fan Ray Batchelor who sadly passed away after Saturday's game. "

Albion beat Watford 3-1.
