He may have played Corrie's bad boy David Platt, but actor Jack P Shepherd has revealed a softer side backing our Feed a Family This Christmas appeal.

The Coronation Street actor threw his weight behind the foodbanks campaign when he heard about it during a visit to Stourbridge to switch on the town's Christmas lights.

He urged people to get behind the appeal and donate what they can for families in need this Christmas.

"I think it's a good cause so I hope people support it," said the 28-year-old.

So far the appeal has received more than 2,600 donated items to help people across the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Every donation is being passed on to food banks and charitable organisations, working to ensure people do not go hungry.

And there is still time to get involved as we are collecting contributions of non-perishable food and toiletries until December 14 to help as many people as possible in the run-up to the big day.

The good causes being supported are The Well (the home of the Wolverhampton Food Bank), the Good Shepherd Ministry, based in Wolverhampton, the Black Country Food Bank, which has centres across Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall, Smethwick Food Bank, Walsall North Food Bank and Cannock and District Food Bank. Also The Haven refuge in Wolverhampton.

On Friday Smethwick Food Bank was the latest to receive a delivery of your donations.

We are appealing for festive food, such as mince pies, chocolates and Christmas puddings as well as basics such as canned goods, long-life milk, fruit juice, cereal, tea bags, coffee, pasta and rice.

Also non-food items such as toiletries, new socks and small gifts would be useful.

Donations can be left at E&S offices in Queen Street, Wolverhampton; Queen Square, Cannock and Market Street, Stourbridge. They can also be taken to Waitrose, Penn Road, Wolverhampton; The Co-operative Food, Wood Lane/Bakers Way, Codsall, and The Co-op, High Holborn, Sedgley.

Already the appeal has been supported by actor Neil Morrissey and Wolves players Danny Batth and Carl Ikeme as well as Walsall skipper Adam Chambers.
