Woman dies in Bilston house fire tragedy

A woman has died after a fire at a house in Bilston today.

The victim, aged 37,was treated at the scene for serious injuries but died at the scene, police said.

Officers were called to Mill Croft, Bilston, at around 10.40am.

A woman believed to be in her 80s was treated for smoke inhalation.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "The house has been cordoned off whilst emergency services examine it to establish the cause of the fire."

One witness to the aftermath told the Express & Star that he saw firefighters 'wearing breathing apparatus, unmarked cars and lots of sirens'.

West Midlands Fire Service said 13 firefighters were sent to the scene, from Bilston and Fallings Park community fire stations.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one woman from the first floor of the building, and helped a second woman to safety from the ground floor.

"The incident is being investigated by West Midlands Police and our fire investigators will be working to establish how the fire started."

The woman rescued from the first floor is understood to be the woman who later died.
