This is the first glimpse of demolition work taking place at Wolverhampton's old indoor market.

The picture, released by C&D Consultancy Demolition, shows how the work has been continuing to flatten the former bustling historic market site.

The work is being carried out in order to provide new parking facilities for shoppers heading both to the new outdoor market, which was opened in April and the city centre.

The site will provide 17 additional trader parking spaces, 85 extra car parking spaces and a further five additional disabled parking spaces.

The conversion will see the old market, Heantun House office blocks and the adjoining Market Hall, on the corner of Salop Street and School Street, flattened.

The relocation of the indoor and outdoor markets in April sealed the fate of the old trading location and the city's new look outdoor market was officially opened.

Now, colourful purpose-built cabins are set up in Market Square. There are a total of 46 licensed outdoor stalls, enclosed by the 16 cabins.

Wolverhampton council faced scrutiny from both traders and customers after the opening for not providing toilet facilities.

New toilets were opened at the end of the September.

Market Square is one of three markets in Wolverhampton, along with Bilston and Wednesfield markets.

The demolition work is being undertaken by Total Reclaims Demolition Limited.
