Images of the wriggling reptile were posted on social media by the Central Motorway Police Group after its officers stopped to help what they thought was a broken down car.

But upon speaking to the stunned family they were told they had in fact pulled over when their dog became distressed.

After investigating they saw the snake had wrapped itself around one of the dog's legs.

Central Motorway Police Group posted an image of the reptile poking its head out from part of the car's interior.

With the family and officers stuck for what to do, police contacted reptile experts who came along and identified the serpent stowaway as not being dangerous.

But they were unable to rescue the snake as it had disappeared into the car.

After being reassured the snake was not dangerous the family continued on their drive home having reportedly just bought the car from Sheffield.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group later posted: "Final update on the snake. The couple who found the snake in their car (and dog) are happy to continue their journey as the snake is confirmed as not being dangerous.

"Appears it has disappeared into the cars structure and will need to be taken apart to get it out."

The family had pulled over to the side of the M5 motorway between junctions seven, for south Worcester, and eight, for the M50, at around 9pm on Thursday.

The snake was later captured.
