An unveiling ceremony was held on Saturday and marked the culmination of efforts to commemorate war causalities from Chadsmoor, in Staffordshire.

The memorial at the junction of Cannock Road and Burns Street was created last April with a plaque containing 160 names of men from the village who died during the First World War.

Two more names from that conflict originally missed off have also been added.

Many of the men's names had not previously appeared on any of the county's memorials.

The service began with wartime songs performed by the Cannock Ex-Servicemen's Choir. Reverend Jane Nash, vicar of St Aidan's and St Chad's churches, greeted more than 100 people who had gathered.

Each of the 41 names were read aloud by students from Staffordshire University Academy, after which Major General John Henderson, who is also Chief Executive of Staffordshire County Council, unveiled the names.

He said: "What they have done in creating this memorial is fantastic. It is an amazing achievement and it is great to see the level of interest it has generated.

"A lot of credit has to go to Councillor Derek Davis and the other people who have driven it forward."

Historian Paul Bedford, who has helped Chadsmoor Local History Society with research for the project was present too.
