The most popular category for suggestions by some distance was Volunteer/Fundraiser of the Year Which, drew an impressive total of 42 nominations.

This was closely followed by Young Star of the Year nominations which came in at 32 and Community Champion of the Year which had just one less nominee.

Ambassador of the Year was next, with Unsung Sporting Hero of the Year not far behind.

The judging panel for the preliminary round – consisting of newspaper representatives, the sponsors and an independent judge – are currently going through the entries, scoring them ready for the round table discussion in early September when the line-up of finalists will be selected.

The glittering awards ceremony itself will then take place on January 19 next year at Molineux, where finalists will rub shoulders with some of the top names in the West Midlands before the winners are announced.

Celebrities from across stage and screen are due to attend the awards, with Sir Lenny Henry CBE backing the ceremony, as well as newsreader Nick Owen, X Factor star Joe Whelan and The Voice contestant Megan Reece. Wolverhampton's Young Citizen of the Year, Emma Curran, has also pledged her support for the awards, most recently followed by Regional Schools Commissioner for the West Midlands, Pank Patel.

Look out for the supplement in early October when the contenders in each of the 10 categories will be published and voting begins.

Though nominations are now closed for the awards, you can still find out more about them and how to be involved by calling us on 01902 313131 or visiting the website at www.starthankyou.expressandstar.co.uk
