Biker seriously injured in crash with road sweeper

A motorcyclist has been seriously injured in a collision with a road sweeper in Birmingham.

The injured man, believed to be aged 30, suffered leg and arm fractures as well as head and shoulder injuries after being knocked from his bike today.

Crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service found the man on Cateswell Road, Sparkhill, with reduced levels of consciousness after they were called shortly after 11.50am.

He was rushed to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, while the driver of the road sweeper was uninjured.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "Crews arrived to find a man on the floor after falling from his bike.

"The man, who is believed to be 30 years old, was suffering from a reduced level of consciousness and had suffered a number of serious injuries.

"Once staff had stabilised his condition he was treated for leg and arm fractures as well as head and shoulder injuries.

"He was then transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham on blue lights and sirens with the doctor from the air ambulance also travelling to continue treatment en-route.

"The driver of the road sweeper was uninjured in the incident."
