It may be too hot for a knitted hat and scarf, but members of a Black Country knitting group have put their talents to a new project, knitting flowers and ribbons for display in Bilston town centre.

The Bilston Yarn Stars have created an array of colourful streamers, floral rosettes and even knitted owls.

The project has also seen traffic lights, lamposts and the pillars of road signs covering in knitted creations, to brighten up Bilston in the sun.

So far, the project has been well received by locals and passers-by, inspiring a few to take up the hobby themselves.

Olivia Cox, aged 82 of Fellows Road, Bilston said: "I think it's absolutely wonderful.

"I saw it all the other day when I was doing my shopping and I thought, I've got to start knitting some colourful squares like that again."

"Then maybe I can give them to the group to use in something like this.

"I think it's beautiful."

The knitted works have also been a hit with visitors.

Philip Jones, aged 43, from Wolverhampton said: "I'd noticed it before but had no idea what it was about.

"My mum has a caravan in Wales and she's part of a group that knits things like this.

"It's lovely to see them out and on display."

Parents have also been taking their children to view the display.

Pam Sidhar, aged 35, of Bilston said: "I brought the children down here to see what it was all about.

"I think it's fantastic, it's so bright and colourful – it's made me wish I could knit."

The project is the latest for the creative group who have previously knitted a large St George and the Dragon which was on display at Bilston town hall in April last year.

The group formed around two years ago and attracted 20 members.

Since its creation, members have worked on the Bilston in Bloom project, Halloween decorations and Christmas embroidery work.

The Yarn Stars, which run weekly sessions on Wednesdays at Holy Trinity Church in Oxford Street, has also raised money for a number of charities.

Now, the group are looking to raise money to buy a ladder. Member of the group, Liane Powell said: "We would really like to raise funds to buy a ladder so we can put some of our knitted displays further up for people to enjoy."

Bilston Yarn Stars is also always after wool donations.

If anyone has any spare wool to donate or would like to become a member they should contact the group's Twitter handle @BilstonYarnStar for more details.
