Travellers set up camp in Dudley learning centre car park

Travellers have moved onto the car park of a Dudley community centre - just days after a group was moved along from a nearby site.

Around 20 caravans set up on the car park of the Dudley Wood Neighbourhood Learning Centre and Library Link community centre on Friday evening.

Ward councillor Bryan Cotterill said he had spoken to management at the centre, who are debating whether to call off a youth club meeting organised for tonight.

He added that it felt as though travellers are 'everywhere' in Dudley at the moment, after numerous camps were set up over the last week.

Councillor Cotterill said: "I was informed on Friday that around 20 caravans had set up camp on the car park of the Dudley Wood Neighbourhood Learning Centre.

"I don't know where they have come from, travellers seem to be everywhere in Dudley at the moment.

"Over the weekend there isn't a lot we can but I will be speaking with our legal representatives at the council on Monday morning to see if we can get them moved along as quickly as possible.

"Having spoken to management, they are going to have to play it by ear on whether they want to call off the youth club meeting scheduled for Monday."

Travellers were moved on from Priory Park in Dudley on Thursday night, while camps were also set up on Woodside Park and Hurst Green Park in Halesowen last week.

The camp is the latest in a variety of cases in Dudley this year.

In March, more than 40 caravans camped on Dudley's Castle Gate Island over the bank holiday weekend.

The unauthorised encampment was moved along, however they were back at Dudley Leisure Centre's car park within a few days.
