Birmingham library demolition progress is just cracking

This view sight of the progress of the demolition of the old Central Library in Birmingham shows how the former iconic building has now been split in two.

Diggers have ploughed through the landmark as demolition teams progress with the £500 million Paradise Birmingham redevelopment.

The development was hailed as the catalyst for transforming the city centre earlier in the year, with workers from Birmingham-based demolition specialist DSM tasked with the major overhaul of the land.

The Paradise Circus development, which was renamed Paradise Birmingham, is being cleared ready for the development of news offices, a hotel and shops surrounding a remodelled Chamberlain Square.

The new buildings will be used for leisure and hotel use, as well as more open public areas and a Midland Metro tram stop.

A hotel and open-air walkways will also be created on the area currently occupied by the library. Traffic has been rerouted around Paradise Circus island. The old Central Library shut after the new £188m Library of Birmingham opened in 2013.
