Police investigation into racist abuse at Wolverhampton council elections

A police investigation has been launched into allegations that two members of the public were subjected to racist abuse at the Wolverhampton council elections count.

Two men allege they suffered racist abuse at the count at Aldersley Leisure Village in the early hours of the morning on Friday, May 6.

Police say they are investigating allegations of racially aggravated public order offences at the event, which was attended by scores of elected members and council candidates, as well as the city's three MPs.

Hannah Fitzgerald, spokesperson for West Midlands Police, said: "We can confirm we have received two allegations of racially aggravated public order offences.

"No arrests have been made at this stage and enquiries are on-going."

Wolverhampton council spokesman Paul Brown, said: "We are aware of the allegations and are cooperating fully with the police inquiry."

The council state on their website that they committed to working in partnership with Wolverhampton Racial Harassment Partnership,WRHP, to tackle and prevent any racial harassment and racial incidents.
