Roy Beckford swiped wildly at his friend Jamie Scott with a eight-inch kitchen knife - and after connecting three times with his face said cooly: "don't get blood on the chair"."

Wolverhampton Crown Court was told the attack ended as quickly as it had started at Beckford's home in Smethwick on February 19.

Mr Scott - who was said to be a long-time friend of Beckford's - was left fearing for his life as the 39-year-old came at him with the blade.

The attack was prompted by an apparently innocuous comment Mr Scott had made about the US President 'singing a song' on a TV programme they were watching.

Mr Marc Davies, prosecuting, told the court: "The defendant came over and punched him to the face. He connected with his left hand to the side of his face, described as quite hard and stunning by Mr Scott.

"The defendant was becoming increasingly angry and stormed into the kitchen to get a large knife - eight to nine inches with a sharp point. He was lashing out with the knife, striking his left thigh. Mr Scott described himself as petrified."

The victim was left with a 10cm cut across his forehead and a 3cm cut above his eyebrow. Beckford then suddenly became calm and sat down next to his terrified friend, Mr Davis said.

Mr Robert Cowley, defending, said class A drugs had been 'an issue' in Beckford's life.

Beckford, of Windmill Lane, Cape Hill, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was jailed to 27 months. A five-year restraining order banning him from contacting the victim was also imposed.
