Crossing calls for death crash road where young mum was killed

Campaigners want a zebra crossing installed on a road where an 18-year-old mother was killed in a smash.

Former Dudley College student Nadine Foster died last month after being involved in a smash on Hagley Road, Old Swinford, in Stourbridge.

It was believed she had been a front-seat passenger in a Ford Focus when it crashed into a wall on April 16.

Helen Anderson, who has lived on the road for three years, has called for the extra safety measures but council bosses say they need to look into whether it can be 'justified' at the site.

Mrs Anderson, who has two children aged four and 13, said: "The majority of the neighbours on this road are highly concerned about this. There are two separate issues with the speed of the cars and how dangerous it is to cross the road.

"In 2014, campaigns had been ongoing for a crossing to be installed but Dudley Council carried out a road survey and said there was not enough footfall and we didn't meet the criteria. Now a young woman has been tragically killed. I have been concerned for such a long time yet still nothing has been done.

"It is diabolic as the cars can be speeding and people are in fear of crossing the road. There are children who are being rushed across with parents, elderly people, lots of dog walkers and people with learning disabilities who are based at the Safeharbour facility nearby who are all finding it difficult to cross."

Alan Lunt, strategic director for place directorate at Dudley Council, said: "We will be studying the area and gathering information to see if a crossing can be justified at this site."
