The motorway was closed northbound between Junction 4 for Stourbridge and Junction 3 for Birmingham West and Central.

The southbound carriageway was also closed to allow the West Midlands Air Ambulance to land.

It took emergency crews about 40 minutes to free a man, believed to be in his 40s, from the overturned car and he was then flown to hospital by air ambulance.

Diversions were put in place and the carriageway was reopened by 12.30pm.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "The driver was taken to hospital with head injuries. His condition is described as serious but stable.

"The investigation is ongoing, anyone with any information are urged to call 101."

The incident happened at around 9am.
