M6 car fire causes major delays at rush hour

A car blaze on the M6 blocked part of the motorway near Birmingham, causing delays for drivers at the start of the evening rush hour.

The car caught fire on the northbound carriageway of the M6 between Junction 6 for Birmingham and Junction 7 for Great Barr at around 3pm.

Traffic was backed up to Junction 4a for the M42 with delays of around 40 minutes as first two lanes and then one lane of the motorway were closed.

Flames were leaping out of the front of the car and smoke was pouring into the sky as the car burned on the hard shoulder.

West Midlands Fire Service attended the scene and all lanes were reopen at 5pm.
