Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Barbara Price, last night paid a moving tribute to Councillor Cooper, who had led the authority since 2009.

She said he had 'showed great ability, passion and compassion in his dealings with so many people'.

Councillor Price said: "As the Mayor of Sandwell it was with the greatest sadness I learned of the tragic death of the leader, Councillor Darren Cooper.

"Darren was much loved and respected by so many people at the council as well as residents of the borough.

"He worked tirelessly in his role as a councillor for the Soho and Victoria ward since 1991 and more recently in his role as leader of the council since 2009.

"In my capacity as Mayor of Sandwell I worked closely with Darren on a number of issues that affected and were due to affect the borough and its residents.

"He showed great ability, passion and compassion in his dealings with so many people.

"I know he was immensely proud of being a 'son of Sandwell' and took that pride and desire to fight for the rights of the people of Sandwell at a local, regional and national level.

"I, like so many people, have lost not just an inspirational colleague but also a friend.

"The outpouring of sadness we have seen from people at all levels across the country, truly reflects the sense of loss we are all suffering.

"On behalf of Sandwell Council and its residents I wish to express my condolences to Darren's wife Caren and his family and offer them our support at this difficult time."

Books of condolence will open at Sandwell Council House in Oldbury from 11am today (March 30) and also at Smethwick Library.
