Cannock Shopmobility service facing the axe

Cannock's Shopmobility service which provides wheelchairs and motorised scooters for shoppers is facing the axe due to a drop in demand.

Council bosses are reviewing the future of the service, which operates in both Cannock and Rugeley town centres.

They said that unless more people begin using it, it 'will not be cost effective' to continue running the service. The Shopmobility scheme provides mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs and motorised scooters for hire and use in town centres.

It was introduced in both Cannock and Rugeley in 2011 for anyone who has difficulty getting around either of the two town centres. The service was used 53 times last year compared with 61 in 2014. It has been used 11 times so far in 2016.

Councillor Diane Todd, portfolio leader for town centre regeneration said: "Unfortunately, there has been a drop in the number of people using the Shopmobility scheme recently and unless usage picks up it will not be cost effective for the council to continue with this service."

"Cannock Chase Shopmobility scheme was set up in 2011, following the pedestrianisation of the town centres, meaning that it is not always possible for people to park or be dropped off close to the shops."

The Shopmobility service was introduced temporarily before being made permanent following a successful trial period. It was prompted by concerns that the longer distances involved with getting from the car, train, bus or taxi caused difficulties for people with mobility impairment, when visiting towns.

Councillor Paul Snape, leader of the opposition and crime and partnerships shadow portfolio leader, said he would support the council's decision should they decide to drop the scheme.

"I understand that the council does not have any money and if it is paid for by money from members of the public and they don't want it spent on that then there are other services it should be used on. I would fully agree with that, he said.

"We know we have got people in the town and surrounding areas that require the service and it has been there for them to use.

"But if they no one is using them and they don't want them then I think that the money should be used elsewhere,"he added.

Cannock Chase Shopmobility has bases at Cannock Indoor Market and Rugeley Market.
