Walsall Council passed the bid to revamp abandoned buildings at New Road on Thursday evening.

Dozens of residents had opposed the plans particularly in relation to the idea of having cars coming and going to be washed in a predominantly residential area.

But applicant Mr Tarsem Singh withdrew that part of the scheme prior to the meeting.

The refurbished building will also include a clothing charity to distribute unwanted items to India.

Councillor Sean Coughlan had backed residents' original complaints and said: "The original application had a car wash that angered residents and neighbours which was clearly expressed through a petition."

"Thankfully applicants saw the negatives and withdrew that part.

"I spoke with residents before the meeting and everybody seemed happy with what was being applied for."

"I spoke at the meeting just to make sure any conditions in agreement are adhered to."
