The fundraising drive is asking fans to donate 'a tenner for Sir Jack' to cover the costs.

The club wants to put the statue on the concourse outside the site of the old Wanderer pub, overlooking the stadium.

The project will be supporter-led, with members of the fan's parliament and former players' association among groups leading the fundraising drive.

Fans will be able to text donations or donate via the official club and Justgiving websites.

A design hasn't yet been finalised, but it will be created by sculptor James Butler, who also built the Billy Wright and Stan Cullis statues at Molineux.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: "We'd like to thank everyone who has contacted the club with ideas and offers of assistance. It's fitting and very heartening to hear that fans want to give something back to Sir Jack and get involved in this unique project.

"The final statue design is being narrowed down and we'll share the details at the earliest opportunity."

Much-loved Sir Jack died last year at the age of 91. His statue will stand at the top of Molineux Street, near the exit of the subway from the city centre, alongside a plaque.

Fans' Parliament member Steve Galloway suggested the 'tenner for Sir Jack' idea.

He said: "Sir Jack sold the Club for £10 and its's a symbolic act of those fans, who can afford it, donating that amount or whatever they can spare, to help create a very special statue for the great man."

Wolves fan Kevin Rogers, chief executive of Paycare and vice-president of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, is also involved in the project.

He added: "The statue is important for so many reasons. It will not only be a fitting, final tribute, but an important piece of public art, which will bring his achievements to the attention of future generations."

Fans will also have an option to donate when renewing season tickets.

They can also donate by texting SIRJ91 plus their donation to 70070, online at www.justgiving.com/sirjackhayward, or via the Wolves website.

Donations will be held in a restricted Sir Jack Statue fund account within the Wolves Community Trust charity, and overseen by a fundraising committee and trustees.
