They swooped on the property in Luce Road, Low Hill, with a search warrant on July 2 last year, explained Miss Joanne Barker, prosecuting.

Officers discovered £680 worth of amphetamines, £305 cash, scales and eight cannabis plants being cultivated in a bedroom, it was said.

The drugs belonged to 32-year-old Bobby Ball who had a £100-a-week cannabis habit himself and whose mobile phone had messages that suggested he had been drug dealing, continued Miss Barker. The cannabis farm was capable of producing up to £3,500 of the drug, the court was told.

Ball, of Luce Road, pleaded guilty to cannabis production and possession of amphetamines with intent to supply and was given an eight month prison sentence suspended for 18 months with 80 hours unpaid work and £300 costs.

Judge John Wait told him: "You were spreading misery and the £100-a-week you are spending on drugs for yourself should be going to your family. But you have shown that you can care for them and find work and that is why I am prepared to suspend the inevitable prison sentence."
