Father-of-four Mr Saini is currently behind bars in Portugal waiting to see if he will face an extradition hearing.

Indian authorities have accused him of being involved in the killing of a prominent Sikh politician and a bombing campaign in the country and want him to return there to face charges.

However, his Mr Saini's arrest and detention while on a family holiday in the Algarve has drawn a furious response from UK politicians, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, as he has been granted asylum seeker status in this country.

Members of his family met with the Portuguese ambassador on Friday who promised them any hearing would be transparent.

Upkar Singh, of the Kesri Lehar activist group, said: "We successfully got Paramjeet Singh's family to meet with the Portuguese Ambassador and discuss their position on the situation.

"The outcome of this was that the Portuguese authorities will now demand every document related to the previous case lodged against Paramjeet Singh in Britain by India.

"These will be compared to the current case being brought against him. This will make everything transparent and have a bearing on the final Portuguese decision. We are delighted with this decision."
