Support for parking limits near Halesowen College

Proposals to bring parking restrictions to a number of congested roads near Halesowen College campus have been backed by councillors.

Last year Dudley Council originally drafted plans to tackle the issues in parts of Whittingham Road, Greenbush Drive, Woodridge Road, Furnace Lane, Furnace Hill, Newfield Lane and Newfield Crescent.

But a new scheme has been put forward which would see waiting bays installed in Whittingham Road from 7am until 7pm.

More double yellow lines will also be painted in surrounding roads and a no waiting restriction would be in place in Newfield Crescent between 10am and 11am, and 2pm to 3pm.

Councillor Simon Phipps said: "There is by no means an easy fix or solution to this problem. After a recent consultation it has been proposed there will be waiting bays put in at Whittingham Road. It is not practical to cover that specific road with double yellow lines, it's something I'm not comfortable with at all. It would leave residents with nowhere to park and the double yellow lines already on the road are not always adhered to during school times.

"It is a complex issue with no right or wrong answer to keep everyone happy. The waiting bays will be imposed for 15 minute time slots for parents drop off and pick up their kids from school and will hopefully alleviate some of the congestion on the road.

"We are proposing potential parking bans for periods of the day in Newfield Crescent. I believe these new plans will be more beneficial and easier for everyone involved."

Last year 31 residents wrote into the council, objecting to the proposals of parking bans and restrictions by the council and a 51 strong petition was handed in.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "They keep expanding the college but not thinking of the impact it is having on nearby houses and where we're supposed to park if there are cars all over the road.

"It can be quite dangerous to even attempt to pull off your drive as you never know what's coming. I'm happy something might now be finally done about it, it's been a constant battle for years."

A final decision will be made on the scheme on February 1 by Dudley Council cabinet member Hilary Bills, who said the council were trying 'to make it easier for everyone to live there.'
