Dudley Private Hire Taxi Association (DPHTA) has published the first video in its three-part-series which promotes safety advise to passengers.

The film illustrates how to tell the differences between official and fake taxis so people can avoid riding with bogus drivers.

It is split into two parts, with the first looking at private hire taxis and the second hackney carriages.

Association chairman Shaz Saleem hailed the importance of the film educating people.

"These projects are very important and it's our job not just the council to educate the public," he said.

"For some time now I wanted to do something that would help in raising safety awareness and after a survey from our customers small videos was the the best option.

"The association aims to provide the best and safest service in the Midlands."

Key tell-tale signs include correct signage from the council and drivers not charging more than what's on the meter.

The film crew gave the video an extra kick with some comedy thrown in and drum-and-bass-esque music played in the background.

This included a fictional driver dressing up in a bright yellow gown with a long black wig and sunglasses.

Despite the playfulness of the film though, Mr Saleem stressed the message being put across was serious.

And the potential risks passengers could face when getting into the cabs of bogus drivers?

"The big one would be not being insured, in terms of private hire," said Shaz.

"Also a bogus driver could also be a potential sexual predator."

The next two films are yet to be released but will look at other safety concerns within the taxi trade.

Councillor Richard Body, chairman of Dudley Council's Taxi Committee, praised the association for its safety work.

He said: "I think it's great to see our drivers taking this initiative.

"I think it is a really good idea, especially as it is reaching Dudley's youngsters.

"The one's who go out and have a drink, it is important that they make sure they are using the right taxis.

"I praise them for producing this video to educate youngsters and raise safety awareness."
