A warning has gone out after bogus salesmen have been attempting to scam cash out of unwitting customers by selling televisions from a van in a supermarket car park.

Sandwell Council's Trading Standards department urged people to be vigilant after reports had come into officials on Monday.

Tradesmen were spotted trying to sell television sets to people from the back of a white van parked in the car park at Asda in Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury.

Reports were made to trading standards officials after reports of so-called traders trying to dupe people in the car park at around 5.30pm.

It is unclear if people had handed over cash to the conmen.

The department, overseen by manager Bob Charnley, tweeted a warning saying: "This is a scam. Don't get caught out."

Last month officials said they had stopped criminals duping people around the borough out of £518,000 during a year-long crackdown.

In addition to working with victims, Trading Standards is also raising awareness of scams and promoted reporting of scams.

People can visit the trading standards section at www.sandwell.gov.uk to find out details on how to report suspicious activity.
