The 32-year old, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after hitting a woman in her 40s on Weston Road, close to Copper Glade, with his BMW.

The woman, who is aged 40 and from the Stafford area, was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "The patient was a woman in her 40s who had suffered head and leg injuries, as well as cuts to her arms and face.

"She was immobilised, given pain relief at the scene and then taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"We had one ambulance and two rapid response paramedics in attendance."

Weston Road was blocked both ways from the town end to Beaconside, with traffic being diverted down Cull Avenue following the crash just before 7am yesterday.

The road eventually re-opened at 10.30am.

Witnesses are being urged to call Staffordshire Police on 101.
