The 32-year-old was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after hitting a female pedestrian with his BMW on Weston Road.

The crash happened close to Copper Glade and County Hospital shortly before 7am and saw Weston Road closed for more than three hours.

The road was shut in both directions from the town end to Beaconside until around 10.30am while police officers dealt with the incident.

The pedestrian, aged 40 and from Stafford , was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital with leg injuries. The driver, also from Stafford, remains in custody and is said to be helping police with their inquiries.

The crash comes just a day after a three car-smash in nearby Beaconside, involving a black Ford Fiesta, a blue Citroen and a Land Rover Discovery.

Today's collision caused major delays throughout Stafford all morning, with the closure adding to congestion caused by roadworks in Beaconside.

Staffordshire Police spokesperson Susi Turner said: "We would like to thank motorists for their patience."

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward and contact them on 101, quoting incident number 82 of January 21.
