Drivers in Wolverhampton had to contend with more than congestion this morning when smoke filled a major route into the city during rush hour.

Smoke from a Twente Express lorry covered a stretch of Stafford Road at around 9.20am, causing disruption for drivers on the busy commuter route.

The smoke poured onto the A449 at the crossroads with Broadlands near the M54, covering the road for around 100 metres.

One passing motorist said he could barely see through the smoke and described the 'acrid' and 'choking' smell of burning rubber.

The lorry appeared to be smoking from its right underside whilst travelling past the Booker store.

Twente, established in 1983, delivers goods from the UK to Holland and Belgium, operating from a distribution centre in Brownhills.

Clive Roberts, operations manager said: "The turbo - part of the engine - suddenly blew.

"The driver pulled over in the next available lay by and the lorry has since been recovered by Shiptons."

Traffic was already heavy on Stafford Road before the incident and drivers heading into the city faced longer delays as a result.
