Dudley Hippodrome campaigners to find out fate

Campaigners hoping to save Dudley's historic Hippodrome will find out their fate in the next two weeks, council bosses have confirmed.

A last-minute bid to save the venue was submitted by a group at the end of December.

Council bosses have confirmed they are now scrutinising the latest proposition, with a decision expected by the middle of this month.

The fresh business plan was put together by Gordon Downing, from the Friends of Dudley Hippodrome, and businessman Dave Mundon.

Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, cabinet member for planning and economic development, said: "We have listened long and hard to all of the alternative suggestions for the former bingo hall and hippodrome building, but we have to draw a line under this to avoid spiralling costs for all tax payers.

"We have received a revised plan from the Friends group and will ask independent assessors to look at this before we respond to the group by the middle of January.

"In the meantime, cabinet made a very clear decision at the beginning of December to allow us to seek permission to demolish the building, subject to some further work about the most appropriate replacement development for the site and we are currently working on this."
