Councillor Peter Smith has submitted a notice of motion to the authority to have a rethink when the council next meets on January 11.

The Blakenall ward member has called on the matter to be referred back to the cabinet.

He said: "This decision is a backward move that will prove unpopular with the vast majority of the borough's residents. The bin service in Walsall has been a success story that serves every household in the borough well, so why change things?

"I believe that once people accept a change in the weekly collection, it will not be too long before it becomes a three-weekly collection or even a privatised service where individual separate household charges are levied."

"This is the thin end of the wedge and I cannot believe that the borough's residents will sit back and let this happen."

Council bosses voted to move toward with fortnightly collections last week.

Leader Mike Bird said money was been wasted on emptying with very little in them stating the move would save £920,000 a year.
