Cracks in M54 cause traffic chaos as emergency works take place

Roadworks have been put in place along the M54 after cracks appeared in the concrete.

Workers are expected to be on site between junctions two, for Wolverhampton, and three for Albrighton until Sunday.

Highways Agency West Midlands said the cracks appeared in the concrete on the eastbound carriageway today, with workers blocking one lane to make way for the repair work, causing some delays which could last into the weekend.

There have been many reports of traffic problems and long queues on the A41 and surrounding routes as motorists looked to avoid the area.

There will be a closure at 9.15pm tonight, when a diversion will be put in place and one lane of the road reopened at 6am tomorrow.

The diversion for tonight's eastbound closure is via the A41 northbound, the A5 eastbound towards Weston-under-Lizard, and the Stafford Road southbound towards the M54 to rejoin at junction 2.

The Highways Agency has said this is to allow work to continue while minimising disruption during the day when there is most traffic on the carriageway and that workers will be working around the clock to carry out the repairs and fully reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Drivers using the M54 tomorrow are warned to expect delays and are urged to leave extra time for their journeys.

Workers are expected to be on site until Sunday.
