Huge crowds descended on Queen Square for the annual event, which also featured Santa and his reindeers and a fireworks display.

Thousands of lights brightened up the evening sky as the people of Wolverhampton were treated to a night of music, Christmas market stalls and a mini fun-fair.

The Chuckle Brothers were joined at the switch-on by Wolves players Dominic Iorfa and Kortney Hause.

Santa and the Mayor of Wolverhampton Ian Brookfield and the Mayoress Paula Brookfield also surrounded the button as it was pressed after a countdown.

Barry and Paul Chuckle were chosen for the big switch-on as they are starring in this year's Christmas pantomime at the Grand Theatre, Peter Pan.

The brothers star as Paul and Barry Smee, with John Altman playing Captain Hook.

They said of the panto and of the Christmas lights switch-on: "Everywhere we do a Christmas panto we're normally asked to switch on the Christmas lights as well. It can be great fun."

Free Radio provided the music and hosted last night's event, while a Christmas market, featuring 30 traditional stalls, was open along Queen Street with shoppers able to get their hands on handmade crafts, gifts and local produce.
