Inderjit Singh Dhariwal, 49, from the Langley area of Oldbury, suffered serious head injuries after being assaulted at a charity event at Samsons Banqueting Suite in Rood End Road at around 2am on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries on Monday.

Police have arrested two men on suspicion of murder: a 36-year-old from Stourbridge and a 42-year-old from Rowley Regis, and after being granted an extra 36 hours, the pair can now be held until late tomorrow night.

The force said the man was involved in an 'altercation' at the venue on Saturday night.

Samsons remained cordoned off yesterday as investigations continued into what happened.

A tent could be seen outside the front of the venue, which regularly hosts wedding receptions and other functions, as forensics teams combed the area for clues. Officers are also scouring CCTV footage from the venue.

A post mortem was due to take place today.

Neighbours living close to Samsons spoke of their shock at hearing what had happened.

Nav Kaur, aged 27, who lives opposite the venue, said: "We were scared when we first heard what happened, being just across the road. There are always parties there on Friday and Saturday nights. We heard some noise but we thought it was just everyone overexcited. It is a shame what has happened."

Amir Chowdhury, aged 36, of nearby Pel Crescent, said: "It is very sad news. I drive past there and see many people in there now and again but there is never any trouble there. This is a very friendly neighbourhood so this news is very shocking."

Another neighbour Adriana Wanat, aged 33, said: "I noticed a police car on Monday but I thought it was just an accident."

Staff at the venue declined to comment.

Detectives investigating Mr Dhariwal's death have urged anyone with information to contact them by calling 101.

Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
