Sad end to toy story as Walsall library axe looms

Walsall's toy library will be axed under a plan by the borough council to save more than £45,000.

The library, which includes a mobile service and offers children under the age of 11 the chance to borrow toys, will be closed down if the plans go ahead.

Toys and equipment are also loaned to organisations such as crèches, day care providers, play groups and schools who support children. Walsall Council says axing the service will save the authority £45,548 in 2016/17.

A report on the plans said efforts had been made to secure interest from the private sector to take over the running of this service but had failed to generate interest. The report added: "It is therefore proposed to cease to provide this service and to distribute existing stock across children's centres and organisations working with and on behalf of the council to improve the learning and life chances of children, particularly disadvantaged children, under the age of 11.

"This will ensure the toys and equipment that have been purchased continue to benefit and be enjoyed by Walsall children."

The toy library service is operated by two part-time employees.
