Fire crews were called to a second floor flat in Wolverhampton Street at around 12pm this afternoon following reports of a blaze.

A fire had taken hold in the kitchen caused by an unsafe cable connecting a washer dryer and a washing machine to the power supply.

Firefighters used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze, which damaged flooring. The female occupant had left the flat by the time they arrived.

Willenhall Fire Station Crew Commander Trev Allers, said: "Potentially this could have been a lot worse than it turned out.

"Two energy hungry units were drawing off the same unsafe cable, which was a recipe for disaster.

"Thankfully the home owner did the sensible thing and turned off the power and left the flat.

"We would advise people not to try and home repair a cable. Always seek professional help."
