Pc Amar Tasaddiq Hussain, 29, of the Birmingham West and Central police unit, appeared before Cannock Magistrates Court yesterday.

He was charged with two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and two counts of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.

Adil Bashir, 25 of Small Heath, and 30-year-old Muhammad Sheikh, of Bordesley Green, were also charged with the same four offences.

All three men will appear before Stafford Crown Court on Friday October 30 and have been granted bail.

The West Midlands force took action to protect its staff in December last year after receiving information stating that an officer was set to be kidnapped.

A subsequent investigation revealed the information to be false, the force said, and led to a 31-year-old man being deported.

Hussain, who is based in Yardley in Birmingham, has been suspended from duty with immediate effect.

The investigation was led by officers from West Midland Police's Anti-Corruption Unit with support from the region's Counter Terrorism Unit.
