Residents 'don't feel safe in homes' after spate of Pensnett robberies

Burglars are targeting homes in an area of Pensnett with residents reporting a series of break-ins taking place during the day and at night.

Corbyns Bromley Tenants and Residents Association said the situation had got so bad many people no longer feel safe in their own homes.

And they have called on police to take action to deal with the escalating problem - claiming a promised increase in patrols around the area has failed to materialise.

The association said the most recent daytime burglary had taken place at an address in Derwent Close earlier this week.

And in another recent burglary they said an elderly resident had left her home for a couple of hours on the Ring and Ride bus only to return and find her property had been ransacked.

Residents in the area have taken to social media - posting information on the burglaries on Facebook and warning people to be on their guard.

They have also appealed for police to take more action on Twitter.

Spokesman for the association Michelle Morgan said: "Recently there has been at least two burglaries a week in the area and this has been ongoing for around six weeks.

"In a lot of the cases panes of glass are being removed from windows allowing the burglars to get inside the properties.

"Understandably people are very concerned. A lot of them have also take place during the day and have occurred when residents have left their home for a relatively short period of time.

"It has reached the point now where people do not feel safe in their own homes.

"The police need to take more action to deal with this issue. This simply cannot continue happening. People are deeply concerned by what is going on.

"In terms of the elderly resident who returned to find her home had been burgled they only took £20 and a bottle of whiskey."

She said at a recent community meeting one of the association's members had been told patrols would be increased in the area due to the number of burglaries.

However no police had been seen on patrol around the estate.

Police today said a 35-year-old man had been arrested after an attempted break-in in Mayflower Drive on Monday, September 28.

Sgt Rachel Turner, of Brockmoor and Pensnett neighbourhood team, said: "While burglary figures are what we would expect to find at this time of year when they traditionally increase, we continue to work with the community to identify those at risk to help them secure their properties and prevent crime."
