Denis Healey dies at 98: Tom Watson pays tribute to 'great character'

A Black Country MP has led tributes to former chancellor Denis Healey who has died, aged 98.

The peer served in Number 11 from 1974 to 1979 and became Labour's deputy leader in 1980.

He died peacefully at his home, in Alfriston, Sussex, on Saturday, following a short illness.

West Bromwich East MP and Labour's Deputy Leader, Tom Watson, said Lord Healey was one of the great characters in politics.

"Denis Healey was a man of great energy, humour and intellect who served his country and Party with distinction," he said.

"He was a talented member of the generation of politicians who fought in the Second World War, then helped build the peace in Europe and shape the post-war world.

"Denis was one of the great characters in politics and was widely admired by Labour Party members. On behalf of them, I send condolences to his family."
