Former England prop Phil Vickery and Wales fly-half Jonathan Davies were the guest speakers at Dudley Kingswinford RFC's World Cup warm up lunch.

The pair of former British and Irish Lions previewed the massive clash between their two nations to an audience of more than 500 at the Swindon Road club.

All cash raised at the event will go towards the running of the amateur club, with club president Graham Robbins saying a large part will be 'ploughed back into the mini and junior sections'.

Mr Robbins said: "This is the biggest day in our history.

"We're trying to ride along with the World Cup and help promote the game of rugby."

Davies, 52, praised the 'great atmosphere' at the gala luncheon: "I'm from a similar background in a club like this and it's great to see so many people have turned up."

He said today's clash between the two rival nations is 'a tight call, but England are favourites' due to having home advantage but supporters 'will just have to wait and see'.

Bullish Vickery spoke of his delight at being invited to show his backing for grassroots rugby, which he said needs to be 'celebrated and championed'.

England will beat Wales 28-25 in a hard-fought encounter today, he predicted.
