New owners for criticised Wolverhampton care home

A care home in Wolverhampton which came under fire from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) last year has been taken over by new owners.

The Commission found a series of failings when they visited the Oaken Drive home, which can look after up to 36 people, in July last year.

The report found the residents' safety and welfare was compromised by a lack of staff.

At the time of the report staff morale was very poor and employees felt they were constantly working with not enough carers on shifts.

The operator, Four Seasons Health Care, implemented an improvement plan back in August 2014 to address all CQC requirements, with more rigorous monitoring introduced to ensure processes and procedures to support quality if care were 'strictly followed'.

An on-going recruitment programme ensuring all staffing levels were compliant with the CQC were put in place, with new staff appointments, including a new chef.

A subsequent inspection took place in September 2014 in which the CQC had noticed improvements at the home and continued to 'liaise' closely with the local authority and the CQC on the status of their improvement plan.

New owners brighterkind will transform the home to include 58 resident rooms, with 68 members of staff now employed.

Jeremy Richardson, Chief Executive of brighterkind said: "We are trying to create something new in the elderly care sector.

"High standards of care are central to our proposition but additionally, people are becoming more concerned about other aspects of service and the overall resident experience is increasingly important. This is particularly so when people are self-funding their place in a care home."

Stephanie Grainger, Home Manager of the care home, said: "With brighterkind we aim to attract increasing numbers of people who choose to self-fund their care, as well as continuing to welcome residents whose care provision is supported by the local authority.

"We are aiming to improve upon last year and look ahead to the future of what this care home can offer those who are looking for care home options."
