IN PICTURES: Deer lock horns at Cannock Chase beauty spot

It is the kind of shot all wildlife photographers dream about - a pair of young bucks locking antlers with each other, out in the open.

The sometimes hard-to-snap fallow deer were captured by Ged Gill from Preston, who took this stunning picture while out on Cannock Chase.

Rutting season or mating season has now started, with males fighting each other, to gain the attention of females.

Mr Gill uploaded a selection to the photo sharing site Flickr.

Mr Gill shared five pictures of deer from his trip, as well as two fox shots and one of a green woodpecker.

He said: "Most of these Cannock Forest photos I've posted were taken from a lodge on a site about 10 miles from Stafford.

"The deer wander the site and more or less eat out of your hand, and they drift off into the wilderness at night.

"I only went there because my wife booked a few days to take daughter and grandson to Drayton Manor."

Fallow deer have been found on Cannock Chase for centuries. Between 800 and 1,000 are thought to live on the Chase.
