The award, presented at a ceremony at Villa Park, recognises a combination of quality coverage and innovative use of multimedia, social media and live blogging.

The Express & Star beat competition from numerous outlets, including the BBC and ITV, to win the accolade.

ExpressandStar.com is owned by MNA Media. Mike Woods, head of digital editorial content at MNA, collected the award on behalf of the team.

Andy Hill, MNA's digital managing director, said that the award was testament to the hard work of the digital team.

"I am delighted that the ExpressandStar.com has won the News Website of the Year at the Midlands News Awards. I think this award reflects the hard work and talent that we have in our editorial teams.

"We have seen a tremendous growth in the number of people relying on the Expressandstar.com as the definitive choice for local news, with over 2.5 million unique browsers accessing our site every month.

"We have invested in our digital content and now get more content online than ever before. We've also focused on adding to the depth of online content, particularly in the area of video content.

"Mike and the team work tirelessly to ensure we deliver a first class product and this award is a well deserved recognition of these efforts."

ExpressandStar.com was not the only MNA publication to be recognised at the ceremony.

Wolverhampton Magazine was highly commended for Magazine of the Year, while Jamie Ricketts from the Shropshire Star was highly commended for the Tony Flanagan Award for News Photography.

Nominations were also received for several other categories. A full list of results can be found here.
