Guardian in court charged with toddler's murder

The legal guardian of an 18-month-old toddler who was found dead at home has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Kandyce Downer, aged 35, is also accused of causing or allowing the death of tragic Keegan Downer, who died on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to Beckbury Road, in Weoley Castle, Birmingham, after the girl was found unconscious at around 10am.

Keegan, also known as Shi-Anne, was rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest but doctors were unable to save her.

Yesterday Downer, who is unemployed spoke only to confirm her name and address at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

Wearing a dark top and pink jumper, she showed no emotion and stared at the ground during the five-minute hearing.

Deputy District Judge David Miller said: "I can simply only send this case to the crown court on September 11.

"Therefore the matter is dealt with here and sent on and you will remain in custody until your appearance at Birmingham Crown Court."

A 37-year-old man from Stourport and a 34-year-old man from Oldbury have both been released on bail pending further enquiries.
