One in four children across the borough are failing to reach the expected standards, the worst in the Black Country, according to provisional Sats results.

Walsall North MP David Winnick is to meet with council bosses to see what action is being taken to raise standards and also Ofsted.

Mr Winnick said: "Information has been published which indicates that 75 per cent of pupils in the borough as a whole failed to reach the expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics by the time they leave primary school.

"The figures, it seems, are the worst amongst the four Black Country boroughs.

"I will of course ask what action is intended to improve the standards of education in the Walsall borough, and certainly in my constituency.

"It is simply unacceptable that so many children are completing their primary and/or secondary schooling at a level which will in many instances make it so difficult for those involved to get and retain good and well paid employment."

Provisional results of this year's national curriculum tests – Sats – show just 75 per cent of pupils achieved at least a level 4 in the 'Three Rs', which is the worst in the Black Country.
