The indoor market is set to be demolished and its stalls moved to the outdoor site in Market Square, with the idea of trading out of stylish modern cabins, similar to those found in Camden or Shepherd's Bush.

But the new market would have a maximum of 70 stalls available for traders, cut from the combined 166 currently on offer.

The opening of the market is scheduled for January

Council bosses claim having fewer stalls will result in a 'higher quality' of service for customers.

A statement attached to the planning application reads: "The council on March 26, 2014, agreed the delivery strategy for regenerating Westside which included the demolition of Heantun House, which encompasses the indoor market.

"The strategy included the retention of the market at Market Square that will allow for the continuity of service and safeguard 70 small businesses that contributes to the economy of the city."

The opening of the new market is scheduled to take place on January 18 next year.
