Two friends had a 'lucky escape' following a kitchen fire in Great Wyrley.

The pair had started to cook in the early hours of this morning before falling asleep.

When crews from Cannock attended the ground floor flat at 3.22am in Beech Court, Walsall Road in Great Wyrley, smoke was billowing from the property which was heavily smoke logged with the two men still inside.

The pair were led to safety by firefighters before being checked over by paramedics at the scene.

Station Manager Neil Burton, who led the incident, said: "I would urge people never to leave cooking unattended on a hob and never to attempt to cook after you have been drinking. The consequences of doing either of these things can be absolutely catastrophic."

"These two men had a very lucky escape. They had started to cook in the early hours of the morning and had left the pan on the hob before falling asleep. The fact that they had working smoke alarms which woke them up potentially saved their lives. It only takes a few breaths of toxic smoke to kill a person – that is how serious this situation could have been."

The cause of the incidents has been classed as accidental. The last crew left the scene at 3.52am.
