Give the guys a break! One Direction's split mocked big Styles on Twitter

So it looks as though there wasn't only One Direction after all.

From mocking the distraught fans to speculating on the band members' future job prospects, the break-up of One Direction saw professional comedians, columnists and parody accounts flood Twitter with their reactions.

Plenty of devoted 1D supporters simply refused to believe the news as many of them clung to the hope that it simply wasn't so.

But celebrities were quick off the mark with Professor Green tweeting: "One direction go their separate ways – is this a paradox? Forgive me I left school in year eight."

He added: "There wasn't only one direction after all."

Much to the amusement of followers. As well as the heart-wrenching typed-out cries of sadness over their impending hiatus, there were more light-hearted responses online.

Twitter user @yonceswanepoel created a photograph of Harry Styles holding a huge collection of Grammy Awards with the caption, 'Harry showing up to the One Direction reunion five years after they split'.

Radio 1 DJ Greg James asked whether he would have to come back from holiday to report on the news in a similar way to how Prime Minster David Cameron has to 'when something big happens' and Daily Mirror columnist Ian Hyland quickly began predicting when reunion tours and reality TV show appearances would begin.

He congratulated Niall Horan on being King of the Jungle for I'm A Celebrity 2016.

TV star and comedian David Schneider, and social media parody Katie Weasel also rose to the occasion.

Along with a snap of the four candidates for Labour leader, Liz Kendall, Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Jeremy Corbyn, David quipped: "Foursome to split and go their separate ways from March. #inevitable… Oh, you mean One Direction."
